Where do I apply for being a Dad?

It sounds pretty cush.

If you're standing right next to the sink, The Kids blow right past you, going to the other end of the house to ask MOM for a drink.

If you want to take a shower, The Kids let you take a shower.

If The Kids get hurt, they scream for MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

If you get sick, you get to wallow in bed. MOM's there to let you. Whereas if MOM gets sick, DAD goes to work like every other day.

If The Kids want help wiping a poopy butt, they request MOM.

MOM is the preferential meat-cutter.

MOM is the first and foremost fight-breaker-upper.

MOM is the book reader.

MOM is the tooth brusher.

DAD just gets to play.

....

But then, when The Kids want to cuddle? Who do they go to?

You forgot one. Person they want to climb on the lap of and wipe snotty noses on = MOM

In my house Dad is not allowed to lock himself in the bathroom for long periods of time without crying and knocking on the door asking 'where did you go?' What can I say, he is loved.

Yes.

It always makes me smile that Sophia comes to my side of the bed when she needs a cuddle at night. And my side isn't closest to the door.

I earned that.

Oh man - all Mom's can relate to this! The new TV show "The Middle" actually had a great line. In the middle of all the kids yelling for Mom while she was trying to get something done, she turns to her husband and says "We did teach them the word DAD, right?" I cracked up.

This made me giggle. I often envy Neil, but you should see him pout when he's home and wanting to cuddle or comfort a little girl who just wants her Mommy...

Were you at my house last night? Or just in my head?

No kidding. I was trying to argue with a writer guy friend of mine about how he's got it so much easier than I do, and he tried to say that no, my husband can watch the kids while I write. Um, yeah, not quite. A kid gets a scratch and comes searching for ME, not him. The slightest argument gets settled by ME, not him. It doesn't matter if the door is closed--they seek me out.

But on the other hand, there are perks Dad doesn't get. They'll never be as close to him as I am to them. Ever.

I am constantly saying, "your dad is right there, can you ask him?"

I love that I'm not alone :)

But yes, I can't help but love that they love me, need me, like me, and want me. It's really good, even if it's totally exhausting.

I am so with you on this one. Plus, when your dad and you come home you get to sit on the couch. If you're a mom you get to put everything away, start dinner, wash the dishes, and clear off the table.

Most of the time I think it's a totally fair trade-off...all that work for all that love.

But there are days....

Definitely a worthwhile trade-off!

Sigh...you are so right. I remember daughter number 2 asking me when she was four, "Mommy, how come daddies take really long showers, but mommies take very, very fast ones?" That summed it up for me.

This is only because you 1) have no daughters, and 2) respond to your kids consistently. Mine go to the nearest adult... unless it's me and then sometimes they go to the NEXT nearest adult. That's mostly because my most common answer is, "In a minute..."

(And have I mentioned that the baby still calls me Daddy? He calls Daddy Daddy, too, but if I say, "I'm Mommy!" he says, "NO!")

A painfully wonderful dichotomy.
